Restaurants, Pubs, Cafes, Tearooms & Catering

Living  in British and New England towns, villages and cities of today we are fortunate when it comes to eating well and enjoying quality local produce, food and drink. Restaurants and the growing number of pubs offering a wide range of meals provide increasing choices and decisions for locals and visitors alike. It is vital that your restaurant, pub or catering company is known to those offering accommodations in your area and the surrounding villages. Equally, diners and guests often enquire about local accommodations and are grateful to owners and staff who have personal recommendations and contact information to provide. 'Word of Mouth Advertising' enables visitors to have a chance to appreciate the finest you and your area have to offer. Please contact us and tell us about your personal favourites!

Bed and Breakfasts, Country Inns, Hotels, Restaurants, Pubs, Caterers and Farm Producers are ideally suited for creating rewarding working relationships.  As a visitor to our site or a member of Countryside Connection, you will all enjoy the ease of finding the perfect choices from amongst our range of quality listings.

Bed and Breakfast Innkeepers are always asked by guests for restaurant recommendations for dining out, or caterers who can provide their services during their stay. Hosting overnight guests and a familiarity with local restaurants and their offerings are extremely important. We can attest to that from personal experience. One particular Vermont restaurant, Max's, a personal favourite, was always a delight to recommend to guests and we were equally pleased when they provided information about Beckwood Pond when asked about the best places to stay. In offering recommendations everyone benefits.

Use the Listings Box if seeking a particular area. When contacting a Member listed below, please let them know that you found them on our Countryside Connection Website. Thank you.

Tanners Restaurant

Tanners Restaurant photo

Tanners  Restaurant’s opening on 17 July 1999 was the answer to a childhood dream we shared, to own and operate our own establishment.  Our vision was an affordable, exciting restaurant where we could develop our own individual style and concept: Fine food, fine wine and an ambience to match. We source the very best in local suppliers to ensure your meal is a memorable one. We make everything on site, fresh each day.

Our backgrounds in the food world are synonymous with great restaurants in London, Bath, France and New York. We are proud to have won the Best Ambassador For Plymouth award, sponsored by First, South West of England Regional Development Agency and The Herald.

UKTV Bright Ideas is now re-showing the very popular series ‘The Tanner Brothers’ Originally the 15 episodes were shown in the UK, it then went on to be shown all over the world and is now back for a rerun in the UK . Chris and James have achieved celebrity status due to their appearances on a number of popular television food programmes. James in particular is becoming quite a regular on Ready, Steady, Cook and Saturday Kitchen as well as the specialist channel UKTV Food.

We are proud to present Chris Tanner’s personal statement which he kindly provided for our website, about his belief in the importance of supporting local producers and the use of seasonal British ingredients. You will find the lnk on our Farm Fare Page ~ please take time to read his important thoughts.

Please access our link to the restaurant’s website for full information about making reservations and their opening hours. PLEASE NOTE: Reservations by telephone only.

“If I were to choose a single ingredient which summed up the essence of chef brothers James and Christopher impeccable craft, it would be chocolate, they do great justice to it” ALBERT ROUX .

The Barbican Kitchen Brasserie

The Barbican Kitchen Brasserie photo

A collaboration between Chris and James Tanner and Plymouth Gin, The Barbican Kitchen Brasserie combines two of Plymouth's best-known brands: the Tanner Brothers and Plymouth Gin.

Situated in the heart of Plymouth's historic Barbican, this lively, well-priced brasserie is located in the very building where the Pilgrim Fathers spent their last night before setting sail in the Mayflower – the Plymouth Gin Distillery.  The cool, funky informality combines with the centuries-old building to create a dining environment that is unique in Plymouth.

The Tanner Brothers are well known to locals and visitors from around the globe through their many television appearances. Years of training and experience in some of the finest kitchens in the world gave the brothers the background they needed to set up their first restaurant, Tanners Restaurant.

This new venture is located in another of Plymouth's oldest landmark buildings, Black Friars Distillery, home of Plymouth Gin. "It's a natural step for us," says Chris Tanner. "It's a complement to what we already do."

Plymouth Gin's Richard Smith adds: "We want to promote great eating, great drinking and a great nightlife". The Barbican Kitchen is set to do just that with a focus on fresh West Country ingredients and a menu that is an affordable mix of comfort food and re-designed classics given a contemporary Tanners twist.

We are proud to present a statement Chris Tanner wrote for our site ~ he and James are passionate about the use of local produce and "Buying British" and their menus are a testament to their beliefs.

Please visit the website for full details and reservation information. Please Note: Reservations are only accepted by telephone.

The Royal Oak - Winchester

The Royal Oak - Winchester photo

Reputed to be the oldest pub in Winchester, The Royal Oak is a red brick structure with an old tile roof; appearance is early 19th Century. The most interesting way to enter the pub is from the narrow paved passage-way, connecting the High Street and St. George's Street. The ancient God Begot House is on the opposite side. At the rear of God Begot House the plan of St. Peter's Church is marked out on the pavement. At the High Street Passageway entrance, take time to read the old plaque on the wall explaining the history of ‘God Begot’.

There is a large pub area on the ground floor with an elevated section at the St. George’s Street End. We would recommend going downstairs to the old part where the ancient walls are visible. It is peaceful and quiet down there with small nooks and a great place to enjoy your pint. It is not at all unusual to find a chess game going on or students studying quietly on their own, or having seminar style discussions. Descend the other staircase to reach the equally unique large Events and Conference Room.

The menu is large and diverse, the extensive range of hamburger combinations is extremely popular with locals, but many other options are available for all tastes and appetites.

The Royal Oak Quiz Night every Thursday night always draws a large crowd. . With an entry price of only £1.00 and no limit on team size it is easy to understand why. There is a DJ starting at eight and the quiz begins at 9:30. Great atmosphere and friendly environment. There are also game machines and table football.

The Royal Oak at Bishopstone, Wiltshire

The Royal Oak at Bishopstone, Wiltshire photo

The Royal Oak has been the heart of the village of Bishopstone since c1650 and parts of the building can be dated back to that era. Eastbrook Farm, home of Helen Browning Organics, has comprised the organic farmland to the north and south of the village for the past 20 years.

Helen and the Eastbrook Organic Food Business are now the tenants of the pub, which becomes one of the range of small passionate interests Eastbrook is developing. Their plans for the pub include slight modifications for guests’ pleasure such as more comfortable sofas and newspapers for relaxed and quiet times. Plans to enhance the four B&B accommodations will take place in the near future, but they are spotlessly clean and comfortable and ready for occupancy at reduced rates which reflect the incomplete plans at the moment.

This is a No Rules Pub~ you won’t hear  “don’t do this or that” or “it’s too early or late to order”. Breakfast is available on Friday from 9am, Saturday and Sunday starting at 10 and all other days the pub opens at 11 serving until 9 in the evening, with the promise that they will always try and find a way to feed those who are hungry after that.

Here you will find, simple food, using great, often home grown ingredients, cooked well and served by engaging staff ~ exactly what you would expect from this new management!
