Weddings

"What a grand thing, to be loved! What a grander thing still, to love!" Victor Hugo

Many of us have wondered about the history and significance of wedding's traditions as well as where some of the rituals originally came from?  In researching information for this category, I found some wonderful and often unexpected answers. I was delighted with some of the unexpected discoveries and hope they will please and enlighten you as much.

Almost everyone is familiar with the rhyme about the traditional bride’s ‘four wedding requirements’ on her wedding day: “Something old, Something new, Something borrowed and Something blue.

But do you know why these four or in fact that there was originally a fifth, less famous requirement? Well, the missing fifth line in the original rhyme stated that the bride "wears a silver sixpence in her shoe.”

Do you know where the rhyme originates? The entire rhyme comes from the Victorian Era and almost every bride has complied with it because they fear bad luck for their marriage if they do not comply. It is said that if you follow the rhyme it is a way of insuring your future happiness.

The history of each line in the rhyme is explained in the following way:

Something old refers to continuity . A happily married woman, usually a close friend of the bride, would give the bride a garter to wear. Apparently the garter had the power to transfer happiness from the giver to the bride. This tradition represents a link from the bride's old life to her new family.

Something new symbolizes the future prosperity of the newlyweds . Most times the "new" is the bride's gown. But according to tradition it can be anything of the bride's choosing.

Something borrowed helps ensure the couple's future happiness . It appears this ‘insurance’ requires that the item borrowed must be returned to its owner after the ceremony. The borrowed item should also be from someone in the bride's family.

Something blue represents modesty, love and fidelity .   Evidently in early biblical times, the colour blue signified purity. Most of us have been taught at some point in our lives that it is the colour white which is meant to signify purity.

A silver sixpence in her shoe refers to happiness and wealth for the newlyweds. A sixpence was presented to the bride from the groom as a token of his love.

“Love is the joy of the good, the wonder of the wise, the amazement of the Gods” Plato
